Now tell me how are you planning for St. Patrick's Day celebration? Very candidly, I'm busy researching a bit to make plan for pairing the right food with the right drink. Yes, just food and drink ... and this is how I want to keep the spirit of St. Patrick's Day fun held high!

How good is Irish red ale with Corned beef? I just found this easy-to-make st. Patrick's day recipe over the net... tried out this weekend and became a fan of it.

Making Corned beef is not all that big deal. This is how to make it:

Ingredients:

Corned beef brisket -- 4 1/2 pounds
Garlic powder -- little more than 1/2 tsp
Black peppercorns -- 6
Bay leaves -- 2
Whole onion -- 1
Mid sized potatoes -- 5 (each peeled well and cut into quarter)
Salt -- as per requirement
Butter -- 2 1/2 tsp
Fresh parsley (chopped) 1/4 cups
Small head cabbage, cut into wedges -- 1
Peeled and sliced carrots -- 5 medium sized

Direction:

Take a pan with water and place the beef garlic powder, peppercorns, bay leaves, salt and onions into it so that everything is under the water. Make sure that the water level is approximately an inch more that the stuff.
Boil it for 25 minutes. You can find residual floating on the surface... just skim it off and let it be in the low heat for 2 minutes more.
Add the potatoes, cabbages and carrots into the mixture and let them boil until the carrots and potatoes become soft.
Put the butter and stir it well and then keep it away from the heat.

This serves 5 with the Irish red ale. So folks just call over your pals and get yourself prepared with plan for the St. Patrick's Day celebration. I've already tasted it the last week and it was simply great... delicious. You can try out recipe at home before St. Patrick's Day. Let me know what you think. Favorite Irish Drink #5: Mead

Mead also known as "honey wine" is made of honey, water and yeast. It's an alcoholic beverage. Meadhing is the practice of brewing honey.

Sometimes mead also contains spices (like cloves, cinnamon or nutmeg) or herbs (such as oregano or even lavender or chamomile) -- which is called metheglin. This word is derived from the Welsh word meddyglyn, meaning "medicinal liquor", as healing herbs were often stored as metheglin so they would be available over the winter (as well as making them much easier to swallow). A mead that contains fruit (such as strawberry, blackcurrant or even rose hips) is called melomel and was also used as a means of food preservation, keeping summer produce for the winter.

Mulled mead is a popular winter holiday drink, where mead is flavored with spices and warmed, traditionally by having a hot poker plunged into it.

You've probably heard of “Bailey's Irish Cream” -- there's also similar liquors like that that are available. They're marketed most to the women. Favorite Irish Drink #8: Irish Coffee
Right after WWII, an Irish barman sought for a solution for the flagging spirits of transatlantic air passengers. What he did was combine a good shot of Irish whiskey plus a steaming hot strong black coffee. He topped it off with thick double cream poured over the back of a spoon. Thus the Irish Coffee was born.

Favorite Irish Drink #7: Poitín
This is the most Irish of drinks and could be described as a neat spirit distilled from whatever was at hand. More specifically the word refers to a strong spirit (on par with German schnapps) made from potatoes. Produced for centuries in moonshine stills up and down the country by tax-conscious enthusiasts. Today poitín (or poteen) can be bought legally and with fewer associated health hazards in most off-licenses.

Hey folks, hope you guys are keeping well. Since St. Patrick's day is on the approach, I thought I'd do a series on the top ten Irish drinks you really should know. Now lets start off with Drink #10 – The Alcopops.

Favorite Irish Drink #10 : Alcopops

Alcopops are really popular with the young crowd. It's basically a mixture of water, sugar, food color, juice and strong alcohol. It's available in many many colors. It's also guaranteed to hasten your intoxication! It does this by masking the alcohol with all those flavors that are added. It's really popular among 15-16 year olds because they can easily get it. In Britain the two most popular brands are Hooper's Hooch and Two Dogs. Bacardi Breezer can be described as a milder form of alcopop.
Don't be fooled by the flavor though. It can give you a wicked headache the next day!

Most of us know that March 17^th is St. Patrick's Day – but did you kow that the whole of March is the Irish-American Heritage Month? How well do you know of your heritage? Here are some facts from the US Census Bureau:

34.7 million number of US residents claim their Irish ancestry. (9 times the population of Ireland!)
24% of Massachusetts residents are of Irish ancestry. That corresponds to the rate of 12% for the nation as a whole.
The Irish are highly educated. 31% of people with Irish ancestry 25 or older have a bachelor's degree or more education. 91% in this age group at least have a HS diploma. (That's higher than the national average of 84%)
Median income for households headed by an Irish-American householder is $51,937 ($46,242 is the national median household income). On top of that, only 9% of people of Irish ancestry were in poverty (that's lower than 13% for all Americans.)

10 Best Irish Movies to Watch on St. Patrick's Day

Hey! see what I have for you guys....I really wanted to get into that Irish mood and hence wanted to lay my hands upon a few good Irish movies to watch over the weekend. I came across these, check them out:

1) The Commitments (1991) - An entertaining, comic film about turning an Irishman's love of Motown and Soul Music into the founding of The Commitments, billed as "The World's Hardest Working Band," directed by Alan Parker.

2) Michael Collins (1996) - Irishman Liam Neeson stars in this historical tale set in 1916 about the founding of Ireland, the roots of the Irish Troubles and the Irish Republican Army. A good but not flawless narrative film version of this slice of history and an engrossing film. Directed by Neil Jordan, who also did "The Crying Game."

3) The Quiet Man (1952) - This is the classic Hollywood view of Ireland and the Irish, starring John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara and directed by the great John Ford, best known for his classic Westerns starring John Wayne. It was shot in Ireland with Irish extras, and it was for years the quintessential Hollywood Irish movie.

4) Bloody Sunday (2002) - Director Paul Greengrass does a documentary like recreation of the fateful North Ireland confrontation that became known as Bloody Sunday, which sparked the violence of the modern Irish Troubles. A serious, gritty film, it captures the emotional impact of the event by using as extras some of the people who were actually there for the massacre. The hand-held, documentary style makes you feel as if you are watching the actual news footage.

5) Excalibur (1981) - Director John Boorman's fantasy-like, Irish-made version of the legend of King Arthur shows off beautiful Irish scenery and is filled with talented Irish actors, including Liam Neeson in his first featured film role. Directed by Boorman on a shoestring budget yet it looks great.

6) My Left Foot (1989) - Daniel Day-Lewis' break-out role as Irish artist Christy Brown who was born with cerebral palsy yet learned to paint and write with his only controllable limb, his left foot. Like many Irish films, it is both funny and inspiring.

7) The Dead (1987) - Director John Huston's last film, based on a story by great Irish author James Joyce, starring the director's daughter Angelica Huston. A dream-like, gripping, art house style gem of a film.

8) Waking Ned Devine (1998) - When the residents of a poverty-stricken Irish village discover that someone in their midst has won a fortune in the lottery, the race is on to find the winner and part him from some of those winnings. This film is hilarious, with some wonderful visual gags and snappy, witty dialog.

9) The Butcher Boy (1997) - Director Neil Jordan's dark-humored, surreal, Sweeney Todd-like tale of a disturbed Irish boy, with a depressed mother and alcoholic father, who talks to a vision called Our Lady, played by Sinead O'Connor. An odd yet surprisingly funny art house film.

10) Breakfast on Pluto (2005) - In a new twist on a common theme, director Neil Jordan bring us another off-beat film, a dark comedy tale of a Candid-like transvestite against the backdrop of the Irish Troubles. The film stars Cillian Murphy and Liam Neeson.

They say that you cannot take an Irish away from his beer. If this so, then take a look at this excerpt that I found here -

Drinking of beer, green and otherwise is definitely part of the rituals involved with this holiday. There is more beer consumed in Ireland on St. Patrick’s Day that there is on any other day of the year. This may well be because of St. Patrick’s Pagan based practice of honoring Brigid with “poteen,” which is an Irish beer made from potatoes. St. Patrick, by the way, is also credited as bringing the art of distillery to Ireland.

As far as green beer goes, it wasn’t until the Irish settled in Boston, and faced immense discrimination that they chose to show their Irish pride by using the color green for all things Irish. Thus began the all American traditions of green beer and the wearing of the green.

Searching for some fun and festive St. Paddy's Day treats? Look no further! The following is a list of easy recipes for St. Paddy's snacks and treats that are sure to delight leprechauns of all ages!

Shamrock Floats
Ingredients:
Lemon/Lime Soda (Sprite or 7-Up)
Lime Sherbet
Procedure:
Fill clear glasses with soda
Float Sherbet Scoops in each glass

Leprechaun Pudding
Ingredients:
Instant Vanilla Pudding
Green Food Coloring
Procedure:
Prepare pudding according to package instructions
Tint prepared pudding with food coloring until desired hue is reached
Mix well

Rainbow Toast
(a fantastic St. Patrick's Day Breakfast!)
Ingredients:
Sliced White Bread
Milk
Food Coloring (Red, Yellow, Green and Blue)
Tools:
Dixie Cups
Basting Brushes

Procedure:

Fill Dixie cups half way with milk
Add a different color to each cup
Brush stripes of colored milk onto bread
Toast bread

*Rainbow Toast tastes even better with Leprechaun Butter (butter tinted with green food coloring)

Lucky Clover Snacks
Ingredients:
Cucumber Slices (wedged)
Celery Sticks
Cream Cheese
Green Food Coloring

Procedure:

Tint cream cheese with food coloring
Place scoops of cream cheese in the center of snack plates
Place cucumber wedges around cream cheese to resemble a four leaf clover
Use celery sticks for stems

Shamrock Shake
Ingredients:
1 Banana
2 cups of Lime Sherbet
2 cups of Milk
Tools:Blender

Procedure:
Blend ingredients
Serve
Green food coloring can be added if hue is not deep enough!

Clover Ice Cream
Ingredients:

Vanilla Ice Cream
Green Sugar Crystals
Tools:
Freezer
Desert Plates
Spoon

Procedure:
Spoon four scoops of ice cream onto desert plates in the shape of a four-leaf clover
Sprinkle ice cream clovers with green sugar crystals
Place in freezer to freeze crystals to ice cream

Irish Apples
Ingredients:
Equal parts cream cheese and marshmallow cream
Wedged Granny Smith Apples
Green Food Coloring
Procedure:
Combine cream cheese and marshmallow cream
Tint dip with green food coloring until desired hue is reached
Serve dip with apples

Leprechaun Pizza

Ingredients:

Cheese Bagel Bites
Green Food Coloring
Tools: Oven / Microwave / Toaster Oven

Procedure:

Add a drop of green food coloring to each bagel bite
Prepare according to box directions

Shamrock Biscuits
Ingredients:

Canned biscuits
Sugar
Green Food Coloring
Tools:Oven Cookie Sheet

Procedure:
Place sugar in a bowl

Pot of Gold Craft:

Materials needed - Paper Plate, Toilet Tissue or Paper Towel Roll, Glue and Paint.

Instructions – Firstly cut the toilet tissue or paper towel roll to a height of about 2 inches and paint it black. Cut the paper plate in half and then cut out an arc shape from the outside edge of the paper plate. One has to ensure that the end of the arc can fit into the hole in the painted toilet tissue roll. The arc now needs to be painted with bright colors so that it has an appeal of a rainbow. Once the paint dries, slide one end of the rainbow into the black toilet tissue roll and glue it in place. Wow ! Now you have a beautiful, colorful pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. To make the pot look more attractive one can sprinkle gold glitter or sequins with the help of glue.

Shamrock Pin:

Materials needed - Construction Paper, Glue, Acrylic Sealer Spray and Pin Backing.

Instructions – Cut out 20 clover shapes for each pin. Use different shades of green to color these cut outs to create a wonderful effect. Glue all the shamrock cutouts on top of each other with the edges lining up as evenly as possible. This will form a stack of shamrocks. Different colors will lead to different colors along the side of the stack. Once the glue is dry, the shamrock stack needs to be sprayed with a few coats of acrylic sealer. The acrylic sealer will make it shine bright as well as make it more durable. Once the sealer dries up, using tacky glue or hot glue gun, glue the pin back in place. You can adorn it with sequins or glitters and then flaunt it around over your coat or dress. It can also serve as a great token to welcome your guests at home.

Customs And Traditions Of St. Patrick's Day

This religious holiday has a few important custom and traditions associated with it. First and foremost, is the custom of wearing green and drinking green beer. As it falls after the fasting season of Lent, there is grand scale feasting which conventionally includes corned beef and cabbage, replacing the traditional treat of boiled bacon. After the special dinner many would go to a ‘caeli’, the Irish dance party.

At the end of the night of festivity and jubilation, the last rite that is performed is the ‘drowning of the shamrock’. The leaf that was so long flaunted on one’s cap or coat, is plunged into the bottom of the last glass of beer. After raising a toast to one’s health, when the glass of beer would be consumed, the shamrock would be taken out and thrown over the left shoulder to welcome good luck into one’s life. Again, in some parts of Southern Ireland, a cross was marked with the end of a burnt stick on the sleeve of each person at the gathering. Kissing of the Blarney stone on St. Patrick’s Day is also another important part of the custom.

What what does a Leprechaun look like and why are they so special? A Leprechaun (Irish fairy) looks like a little old man. A Leprechaun is about 2 feet tall and dresses like a shoemaker with a cocked hat and leather apron. A Leprechaun's personality is described as aloof and unfriendly. They live alone and pass the time by making shoes. They're special because they also possess a hidden pot of gold.
Leprechauns are little make-believe fairies from Ireland. Leprechauns are the little old men who are shoemakers for the fairies. They usually stand about 2 feet tall. Treasure hunters can often track down a leprechaun by the sound of his shoemaker's hammer. The legend is that if you catch one you can force a Leprechaun to tell you where he hides his gold.

Come March 17 and out comes an Irishman - no all the Irishmen, and women, and children…by the thousands - to celebrate Just Being Irish ! On St. Patrick's Day, they'll parade all their traditions and colors, play their music and dance their jigs, they'll feast on traditional Irish food and drink, yes, they'll actually kick up their heels and have a blast and if you're not Irish…don't you worry…you can join in too!!! Yes, the St. Patrick's Day Parade would welcome you as an "honorary person" for the day - just get your green wig, wear a shamrock on your green lapel and get your green beer along, and we'll all be one big happy Irish Family !

March 17 is the anniversary of the death of one of Ireland's greatest heroes - St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, and has been celebrated for thousands of years as a Catholic feast day and a religious holiday in Ireland, with Irish families attending a church service and then going home to celebrate with family and friends, since Lenten observances and prohibitions were relaxed on St. Patrick's Day.

At a typical St. Patrick's Day Parade, one thing will stand out - the color Green - not St. Patrick's Color (which incidentally is Blue!) but the national color of the Emerald Isle, symbolic of the coming of Spring. Everyone will proclaim themselves Irish for the March 17, there will be loads of Irish jokes going around, and you'll catch a lot of wannabe Irish speaking the lingo! Bagpipe music rules the air and the floats will take your breath away. Leprechauns will dance in and out of view and the well-dressed Irish lads and colleens will have you staring !

Everyone at the St. Patrick's Day Parade dresses in green (you be careful in school or you'll get pinched for not wearing green!). Put a bunch of shamrock in your hair or on your lapel or cap and get into the swing of the thing. You'll have to dance the Irish jig, drink green Beer, and probably have a go at dyeing your city's river green. Don't forget the St. Patrick's Day Parade throws - you'll be missing out on something real fun if you miss one o' those - (psst!) sneak in some Irish potatoes !

Typically, a St. Patrick's Day Parade will be led by one or more Grand Marshalls and a unit of soldiers 'escorting' it through the streets. Following them are the city's Irish societies, clan by clan, interspersed with decorated floats (well over a 100 in some cities) and marching bands. Every city's St. Patrick's Day Parade will have a theme, so they'll organize and decorate their floats accordingly. These themes could be anything from 'Unity' to 'Sports'. There could be Irish bands or bands playing Irish music on some floats and there'll definitely be the throwers with loads of cabbage !

The boisterous exuberance of the St. Patrick's Day celebrations we know today has only recently been introduced, and not in Ireland. It was in Boston in 1737 that the first public celebrations of St. Patrick's Day were seen - just bands of Irishmen following each other from one tavern to the next - to remind themselves that they were Irish and that they'd better be proud of it. One fine New York City day, on March 17, 1762, Irish soldiers of the English military took to the streets in a Parade, playing Irish music to celebrate St. Patrick's Day. It greatly reinforced their patriotism, and helped them connect with their roots, but more importantly increased their pride in themselves and in their homeland. It was also the beginning of yearly celebrations of St. Patrick's Day, and the New York City Parade, up 5th Avenue is the largest ever St. Patrick's Day Parade in the United States, and draws a million spectators each year.

The Irish numbers in America increased by almost a million when the "Potato Famine" of 1845-49 in Ireland drove them there to escape starvation. They soon became aware that their significant numbers carried political power. They started to organize and soon their 'green machine' was courted as an important 'swing vote', and being seen at a St. Patrick's Day Parade became the in thing for political wannabes.

In Ireland, Dublin hosts the St. Patrick's Day Parade and although St. Patrick's Day has always been a national holiday, festivities are now drawn out into a good week of celebrations. It is now called the St. Patrick's Day Festival and features outdoor music and dance performances, food and craft festivals, pageants, shows (from dog shows to car shows) and a display of fireworks and is Ireland's largest annual celebration.

So endearing are the traditions and festivities of St. Patrick's Day, that Parades are now taken out in such far off lands as Russia, Japan and Singapore !

Saint Patrick's Day Symbols and Legends

When it comes to St. Patrick's Day, you'll find awesome tales to tell. Most are indeed tall tales, but so endearing to the Irish, that they form a truly adorable and entertaining part of St. Patrick's Day Celebrations. Irish culture is centered on a rich tradition of myths and legends. Tales were passed down from one generation to the next, usually orally, and naturally, colorful trimmings were added and we have today magical, amazing stories ! Some of this color seems to have splashed on to stories surrounding St. Patrick, and it's really difficult to draw the line between fact and legend !

The Shamrocks: Irelands national emblem and the symbol of St. Patrick's Day, this humble three-leaf clover is what St. Patrick is said to have used to explain how the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit could exist as three separate elements in one entity. Some say that St. Patrick stood in a field of shamrocks (Gaelic = 'seamrog') when he drove all the snakes out of Ireland. The Snakes: Ireland has no snakes. That St. Patrick has anything to do with could very easily be a legend, but it is said that St. Patrick once stood on a hill (now called Croagh Patrick) with only a wooden staff in his hand and "banished" all the snakes from Ireland during his sermon. Raising people from the Dead: You'll hear a lot of stories where St. Patrick is said to have raised people from the dead.

The Color Green: Ireland is known for its beautiful green landscape, and so it has been named the "Emerald Isle". Not surprisingly, green is Ireland's national color, and everyone wears green on St. Patrick's Day. History says that it was the Scandinavians and the Celts, enchanted by the lush 'green' island, who gave Ireland its original name "Irlanda". Some Irish say that 'green' honors the farmers who burnt green leaves and spread the ash over their fields. Others will say that green signifies the coming of spring after the harsh Irish winters and St. Patrick's fans (all the Irish are !) will all wear green on St. Patrick's Day, although St. Patrick's color was blue! Whatever the reason, St. Patrick's Day is the day to wear green, so do it, because if you don't, you'll get pinched !

Leprechauns and the Pot of Gold at the end of the Rainbow: The name leprechaun comes from the old Irish word "luchorpan" which means "little body."
A leprechaun is an Irish fairy who looks like a small, old man about 2 feet tall. He is often dressed like a shoemaker, with a crooked hat and a leather apron.
According to legend, leprechauns are aloof and unfriendly. They live alone, and pass the time making shoes. They also have a hidden pot of gold! Among all the kinds of fairies and elves . The leprechauns were a group of fairies never over 2 feet tall. These little people were considered very unsociable. They lived alone and their aloofness was attributed to the belief that each Leprechaun obsessively guarded his pot of gold said to be hidden at the end of a rainbow

The Blarney Stone: If you can't visit the Irish village - Blarney, you can have your own made as part of your St. Patrick's Day celebrations and stand back and watch the fun ! Legend has it that a witch cast a spell on a stone in the Blarney Castle, and anyone who can kiss it catches the Blarney bug - yes call it what you wish - the gift of the gab, charming the socks off someone, smooth talk, clever persuasion or just plainly - the ability to convince someone by your sweet words -"the gift of Blarney

The Irish Harp: The Irish harp is one of Ireland's, and indeed the rest of the world's, most ancient musical instruments and a popular symbol on St. Patrick's Day celebrations. Although its popularity is not comparable to that of the shamrock, it occupies an important place in an ensemble, and Irish music played so widely on St. Patrick's Day would be incomplete without this classic instrument.

The Celtic Cross: When St. Patrick went about converting the native Irish, who followed a nature-based religion, to Christianity, he made use of their own symbols and rituals. A popular example is the Celtic Cross. St. Patrick superimposed the image of the sun, an Irish symbol on the Christian cross so that a new symbol was formed. Celtic crosses, along with the popular Shamrock, are sported by almost everyone on St. Patrick's Day.

History and Origin of Saint Patrick's Day

St. Patrick's Day falls on March 17 every year. It is.A worldwide celebration of Ireland and everything Irish;A joyful resounding of "Erin Go Bragh"; A time for Parades and Jigs and fun;A world through green glasses, shamrocks and blessings abound…

Yet under all the green and excitement is the story of a man…… not even Irish, to whom the celebrations on March 17 are dedicated ! St. Patrick's Day is a tribute to the national hero of Ireland, and all the Irish people. St. Patrick, who dedicated his life to, and braved all odds to share his faith with, the people of Ireland, was born in the latter part of the 4th century to wealthy parents in Roman-ruled Britain. St. Patrick was christened Maewyn Succat, and renamed Patricius (later Anglicized to Patrick) by Pope Celestine.

When he just 16, marauding Irish brigands kidnapped St. Patrick and sold him in Ireland to an Irish chieftain. A slave for 6 years, St. Patrick herded cattle and spent a lonely, contemplative life in the Irish countryside, gaining in knowledge of the Celtic way of life, their language, their Druidic culture and their nature-based beliefs. Turning to religion, in his loneliness, St. Patrick is said to have experienced visions and voices telling him that it was time to leave Ireland. He escaped to Britain, and then moved to the Continent where he studied for 12 years under St. Germaine, Bishop of Auxerre in France. During this time, St. Patrick's prayerful life once more led him to see visions, and the voices urged him to return to Ireland and to take the light and redemption of Christ to the Irish.

St. Patrick returned to the island of his captive life around AD 432, preaching to the Irish and easily converting them by the thousands. Knowledge of the language and culture made St. Patrick's task easier, as did his clever approach to converting the Irish to Christianity - St. Patrick never attempted to stamp out Irish rites and rituals. Instead, he blended them with Christian customs and teachings thus winning people over easily. We can see the evidence of this in the Celtic Cross and the bonfire at Easter. Opposition from the Druids caused St. Patrick to be arrested many times, but he always escaped. For 30 years he traveled extensively, preaching Christianity and converting thousands. St. Patrick set up several schools and churches facilitating the progress of his mission. St. Patrick's brave and enlightened journey came to an end when he died on March 17, AD 461.
As with all saints, whose feast days are celebrated on the anniversary of their death, the church named March 17 as St. Patrick's feast day.

Since then, in his honor, the Irish remember St. Patrick on the anniversary of his death, observe every March 17 as a religious holiday and commemorate it as St. Patrick's Day. It is St. Patrick's efforts, his dedication and his love for the Irish people that are recalled and celebrated every March 17 on St. Patrick's Day, and it is his inspiration that is sought every March 17, in today's difficult world. If the national faith of Ireland is Catholicism and 93 % of its people Catholic, if there is indeed a St. Patrick's Day to celebrate Irish traditions and customs, Ireland owes it to Maewyn Succat, who learnt to forgive and heal the wounds of victimization and by doing so, made the world of love a possibility.
